DE&I AND INCLUSIVITY

This week, it’s DE&I’s turn to take the spotlight. Or IE&B or DE&IB, depending on your definition. 

Four years ago, we defined our company's vision - “The Get-Optimal mission is to create and radically accelerate equitable hiring opportunities for every recruiter and direct employer by increasing the quality and diversity of candidates we help to deliver”. It’s never been more than relevant today.

DE&I stands for diversity, equity and Inclusivity. This one’s a legal requirement in the UK, and whilst it might seem like DE&I are buzzwords, they’ve transcended their moment as the next big thing and are now firmly rooted in any smart recruitment team’s strategy as they attract the broadest range of talent.

Why should I care about DE&I and Inclusivity?

As mentioned above, this one’s a legal requirement in the UK. The Equality Act (2010) protects any or prospective workers from discrimination due to nine protected characteristics. That’s age, disability, gender affirmation, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and sexual orientation. 

You can’t profile your ideal employee using any of these for Job Adverts unless you can actively prove a genuine business need. You can’t, for example, express a preference for a male or female candidate or (even if your vacancy is entirely in Spanish) ask for a Spanish applicant. 

Whilst this direct discrimination might be easy to figure out, the Equality Act also protects against Indirect Discrimination, such as all applicants to a job being Northern or asking for an unobtainable level of experience for younger potential employees (i.e. 10+ years).
